And 11 samples, or about five percent of imported, raw, farmed shrimp, had antibiotic residues. "The antibiotic use is particularly troubling because it's illegal, it promotes antibiotic resistance, and it just isn't a responsible way of farming," Rangan said. Consumer Reports recommends buying responsibly sourced wild shrimp, like those recommended by Seafood Watch or certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. First-Quarter 2015 Financial Results For the first quarter of 2015, Tetraphase reported a net loss of $21.0 million, or $0.66 per share, compared to a net loss of $13.5 million, or $0.53 per share, for the same period in 2014. Molecular homing beacon redirects human antibodies to fight pathogenic bacteria -- ScienceDaily

The study offers the first proof-of-concept that Alphamers have the potential to specifically redirect pre-existing antibodies to bacteria and rapidly activate an antibacterial immune response. "Our next step is to test Alphamers in animal models of infection with multidrug-resistant bacteria that pose a public health threat, such as MRSA," said first author Sascha Kristian, PhD, visiting research scholar at UC San Diego and associate research director at Altermune Technologies, a company Mullis founded to develop Alphamers into unique therapeutics. "Meanwhile, we'll also be tweaking the Alphamer to make it more potent and more resistant to degradation by the body." If Alphamers continue to show promise, natural mrsa cures researchers might be able to apply the same concept to attack any type of bacteria or virus, or perhaps even cancer cells. "We're picturing a future in which doctors have a case full of pathogen-specific Alphamers at their disposal," Nizet said. "They see an infected patient, identify the causative bacteria and pull out the appropriate Alphamer to instantly enlist the support of the immune system in curing the infection." The study offers the first proof-of-concept that Alphamers have the potential to specifically redirect pre-existing antibodies to bacteria and rapidly activate an antibacterial immune response. "They see an infected patient, identify the causative bacteria and pull out the appropriate Alphamer to instantly enlist the support of the immune system in curing the infection." An animation of the Alphamer technology is available at: https://youtu.be/5cfxhu3YqGs Story Source: The above story is based on materials provided by University of California, San Diego Health Sciences . ( CBAY ) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing therapies to treat metabolic diseases with high unmet medical need, including serious rare and orphan disorders. Arhalofenate, the company's lead product candidate, has shown two therapeutic actions in a single drug in multiple Phase 2 gout studies. In gout patients, arhalofenate is intended to prevent painful flares in joints while at the same time promoting excretion of uric acid by the kidney, thereby addressing both the signs and symptoms of gout and the hyperuricemia that is the root cause of the disease. CymaBay's second product candidate, MBX-8025 is a potent, selective, orally active PPAR agonist. A Phase 2 study of MBX-8025 in patients with mixed dyslipidemia established that it has an anti-atherogenic lipid profile. CymaBay has initiated a pilot study of MBX-8025 in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

The Weekend Warrior: Avengers: Age of Ultron - ComingSoon.net

soulboysww If you take your Ritalin, though, you'll be rewarded with much unnerving, innovative derring-do, if not a wholly satisfying affair. The three story lines unfold in Mexico City in three separate years 2002, 2006, and 2010 all during the World Cup, all involving brutal kidnappings. Even subtle visual cues are scarce: Since the characters' fashion styles don't change, you need to catch, for a punishingly long time, every lightning-fast soccer game announcement or title card to distinguish between vignettes. Unlike in similarly non-sequential films, like those of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, here it takes more than half the two-hour running time for the stories to overlap. They do so rather crudely, with many plot threads left unexplored (it's curious why a film this furious about mounting crime rates spends so little time on the victims themselves). The only figures with any depth are Lupe (Tenoch Huerta), a short-tempered but well-meaning cop eventually destroyed by police corruption, and Doroteo (Kristyan Ferrer), a young aspiring boxer tempted toward crime.

Within the first few minutes, we meet the twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (never called by their code names, mind you) and shortly after that, one of Tony Starks Brother Eye-like experiments goes wrong and Ultron is born. From there, it doesnt take a comic book reader to figure out the three villains will team-up before the twins realize that Ultrons ultimate plan goes against their own beliefs. The biggest problem is that from the get-go, Whedon overcomplicates the idea of the films title villain. Ultron being a sentient robot that can control electronics is cool enough that it shouldnt be hard to explain.

Novartis (NVS) Beats on Earnings in Q1, View Reiterated - Analyst Blog - Yahoo Finance

Only about 2 percent of asthma patients on the lowest dose of steroids experienced adrenal insufficiency, compared with about 22 percent on the highest doses. Similarly, slightly more than 1 percent of asthma patients on short-term steroids developed adrenal insufficiency, compared with about 27 percent on long-term treatment. There is no way to safely halt treatment with corticosteroids that can rule out the potential for adrenal insufficiency, Dekkers said. The side effect is more likely when patients take higher doses of steroids or remain on treatment for longer than three weeks, said Dr. Roberto Salvatori, medical director of the pituitary center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. "It's likely, and it's often overlooked because most often the people who prescribe corticosteroids aren't endocrinologists; they are in other specialities and they don't recognize the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency," said Salvatori, who wasn't involved in the study He gives his patients on corticosteroids medical identification bracelets or necklaces to wear so they can be identified as at risk for adrenal insufficiency in an emergency.

Common asthma steroids linked to side effects in adrenal glands | Fox News

People with adrenal insufficiency do not make enough of two hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress, recover from serious about psoriasis infections and regulate blood pressure and metabolism. Aldosterone helps maintain the right amounts of salt, potassium and water in the body. While on steroids, the body often produces less of these hormones naturally, and after coming off the drugs it can take a while for natural production to ramp back up. The result is adrenal insufficiency, which can be treated with medication to replace cortisol or aldosterone. Dekkers and colleagues analyzed 74 research articles published from 1975 to 2014, covering a total of 3753 study participants, to see how different doses and types of corticosteroid treatment might impact the likelihood of developing adrenal insufficiency after treatment. Researchers found the risk of adrenal insufficiency was highest when corticosteroids were taken orally or injected, and lower with inhaled, nasal or topical treatment.

As we approach Celgene's Q1 release, I'd suggest paying close attention to any commentary management makes regarding future collaborative efforts, and/or any new clinical data being unveiled. Collaborations may cost Celgene money up-front, but it's the perfect recipe for delivering organic growth. Any chance of a dividend? Lastly, I'm interested to see if management has changed its tune at all with respect to paying a dividend. Previously, Celgene's management team had suggested the prospect of a dividend was probably a ways off. This isn't too much of a surprise considering that Celgene shuffles a lot of its cash flow into its collaborations and existing clinical development. However, a few of Celgene's comparably sized peers have begun paying a dividend, leading some investors to wonder whether Celgene might also decide to begin paying some form of quarterly stipend to investors. Since 2009, Celgene's operating cash flow has more than tripled from $910 million to $2.8 billion in 2014, leaving plenty of extra cash on the table to potentially return something to investors.
